Jacob Riis Biography&Photos

Jacob Riis 
Jacob Riis was born in Ribe, Denmark in 1849.
He immigrated to New York in 1870.
For a while he lived in police lodging houses.
He had trouble finding work and had to beg for food.
Eventually he got a job as a police reporter with New York Evening Sun, where he worked in the poorest and most crime ridden areas of the city. 
He began bringing a camera to work with him and documenting what he found in these neighborhoods.
Jacob Riss is considered to be one of the fathers of modern photojournalism.
He died in 1914, Seaside Park in Rockaway was named in his honor.
